Gallery Link: x10 | 2011 MTV Movie Awards – 5 June 2011 ![]() What happens when four college kids are stuck in their car after an avalanche hits?
The MTV film follows Jenna (Zinser), Ethan (Reid Ewing), Dante (Nick Thurston) and Liam (Ricky Mabe), who go on a snowboarding trip during spring break. After an avalanche hits, leaving them trapped, the movie takes a psychological turn that Zinser says “examines the themes of truth, the relationship between truth and fear, and all the consequences of living dishonestly.” Although the thriller seems a far cry from the actress’ role on 90210, she was drawn to this character for some similarities Jenna has to Ivy.
Jenna breaks down throughout the movie when she learns one friend is in love with her and another is a complete jerk. As the hours go by, the group fights to survive the deteriorating temperatures as well as each other. While The Truth Below isn’t typical MTV fare, Zinser believes it will appeal to the network’s audience.

Here’s what she had to say about everything from being a tomboy to making real friends. You might know Gillian Zinser as 90210 surfer-chick-turned-teen-bride Ivy, but this month, she’s starring in a new movie called The Truth Below, on MTV (June 16, at 10 PM). In the movie, Gillian and three guy friends (including her crush) get trapped in a car in an avalanche, on a snowboarding trip. Things spiral out of control as they start freaking out and sharing their deepest, darkest secrets. The whole things seems pretty intense (and scary in a very real way), so we sat down with Gillian to get the scoop on her character Jenna, what it’s like to have mostly guy friends, and how well she thinks her friends actually know her. 17: What’s your favorite thing about your character Jenna? GZ: Jenna is a guy’s girl. She’s a tomboy, but what I found interesting was how protective she is of herself. Underneath all these tough layers, she’s still your average, vulnerable girl with a crush on a boy. 17: In your own life are you more of a guy’s girl or a girl’s girl. GZ: I grew up not having very many girl friends. Girls tend to be competitive. I actually went to the school Mean Girls was written about, so you can only imagine what my high school experience was like! I was more comfortable with guys growing up, but now I find myself more comfortable in my own skin and open to people, regardless of their gender or popularity or any other label, as a result. 17: This movie is all about letting down your defenses, and figuring out how well you really know your friends. How many of your friends do you think really know you? GZ: That’s been a pretty relevant theme in my life lately! I moved from DC to NY and then from NY to LA. The most interesting part of my move was the social part. It was kind of a social detox. In NY you’re always around people, but in LA you can go days without seeing anyone. The people in my life are friends I have by choice. I’ve made a conscious effort to have them in life. I only have the time and energy for so many people, which has cut down my friend group to a handful, but I’m so much happier with fewer good people, who really do know me. ![]() After its success with the My Super Psycho Sweet 16 slasher flicks, MTV goes for more psychological tension in its latest original movie, The Truth Below (premiering Sunday, June 16 at 10 p.m. ET/PT). Yet the man who helmed it made his name with a stalker opus: Scott Glosserman, who won raves for his debut feature Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon a few years back and spoke exclusively with Fango about his new opus. Forgoing Mask’s satirical approach, Glosserman aims for screws-tightening suspense with Truth’s study of four young people under pressure. Jenna (90210’s Gillian Zinser), Ethan (Reid Ewing), Dante (Nick Thurston) and Liam (Ricky Mabe) are a college-age quartet heading home from a snowboarding vacation when their car goes off a mountain road and winds up buried in the snow. Unable to free themselves or the vehicle, they decide to play a game in which they share secrets from their pasts, slowly revealing dark sides and threatening each other’s ever-dwindling hopes of survival… FANG: How about selecting your cast? Was there any particular quality you were looking for during the auditions? The cast was spectacular. They were all anxious to do something different. Gillian’s role is completely different from the one she plays on 90210, and she really stepped up to the occasion. Reid Ewing also goes completely against type from what he plays on Modern Family, and I think people will be amazed at his performance. They all brought it; Ricky Mabe has been in the game for a long time, a lot longer than many others, and he brought a real even-keeled, professional quality to the cast. He was a real great anchor for everybody. And Nick Thurston’s a movie star; he’s incredibly charismatic and bright. All of them were so prepared, so professional, so talented, and it just made my life as a director that much easier. The other thing is, we were all friends, we were all a big happy family, especially given that we were in a confined space for such a long time, and we all got along tremendously. That really helped too. ![]() Gillian and Jessica were pictured at The Box Club in London, UK on May 21, 2011. The two-hour thriller stars Gilian Zinser (90210), Reid Ewing (Modern Family), Nick Thurston (Surviving Ophelia) and Ricky Mabe (Zack and Miri Make a Porno) as college friends who learn more than they bargained for about each other after getting trapped under an avalanche returning home from a snowboarding vacation.
The Truth Below marks the sixth original movie from MTV since the network launched its new movie initiative in 2009. Let’s just say the movie involves threesomes, a nasty game of truth or dare, and a pretty good chance of death. Read what Matt tells about another work with Gillian: And which girl gets to play your love interest? Any hot scenes we should be particularly excited about? With both women at once? Was it awkward being in the middle of two girls? Speaking of Gillian, were you happy you got to work together outside of 90210? ![]() To expose the plight of the 1.4 billion people still living on $1.50 a day, some members of Young Hollywood live below poverty line –at least for a few days. It’s part of the Live Below the Line Campaign initiated by Hugh Jackman to help end extreme poverty. Some Young Hollywood stars embraced the challenge by pledging to live on $1.50 a day for 5 Days to encourage people everywhere to think about the daily reality faced by over a billion people on the planet. Hit series “90210″ cast members, Jessica Stroup, Gillian Zinser, Matt Lanter, Trevor Donavan and Michael Steger have pledged their support for the campaign, and invite other Americans to go on an empathetic and educational journey that will cast light on how a quarter of the world lives. From May 16 – 20, thousands will be living on $1.50 a day for 5 days as part of the Live Below the Line initiative. The benchmark amount of $1.50 a day is the level defined by the World Bank as the “extreme poverty line” where basic resources such as food, shelter and medicine are often unsatisfactory. Gillian Zinser and Matt Lanter, who are currently working on a film, decided to take the challenge together using social media platforms, like Twitter as well as Flip cameras to self-document and spread the word about their experience to their fans. The campaign has already received a huge response from eager, inspired fans now taking on the challenge themselves. They said doing live below the line made them think a lot about the limitations people in this situation have to face everyday. Check out the short video montage of Gillian’s experience.
![]() The Cannes Film Festival is a place where high profile movies debut, and many others try to snag international distribution deals. The movies don’t even have to be finished yet. Liars All is showing a sizzle reel to buyers. We were on the set in Los Angeles on Friday as they’re still shooting the movie.
For all you Cannes buyers, here’s what you’ll see if you take a meeting with CMG’s team. Liars All is a mystery thriller with sexual themes starring Sara Paxton, “The Tudors”’ Torrance Coombs and “90210” stars Matt Lanter and Gillian Zinser. A game leads to a murder, and three different recollections of the event uncover what really happened.
Also a far cry from “90210.” Zinser gets to play a dangerous femme fatale.
In the spirit of Cannes, Liars All is a European movie. It’s set in London as American college students go abroad, and Brightly is shooting it like a European movie.
So a teen movie with Bertolucci references.
Oh, and Brightly’s already going for an R rating. There won’t be any nudity, but the plot gets twisted far beyond what they can show on The CW.
![]() I added in the gallery HD captures with Gillian from episode 22 of “90210”. I hope everyone enjoyed the finale, but it’s made me sad to wait so long for another season. Gallery Link: x544 | Screen Captures: 90210 – “To The Future!” ![]() Teen marriage can be taboo, but not the way The CW’s 90210 is readying to showcase it. It’s no secret that Gillian Zinser‘s surfer gal Ivy will be tying the knot come season’s end, but since some of you prefer to stay spoiler free, I’ll advise you to avert your pretty little peepers…now. Why? Because I’ve got the full story from the actress herself, featuring all sorts of scoopy must-know details. Like the fact that the groom-to-be is Raj (Manish Dayal), duh!
Though the rushed wedding is sadly the result of Raj’s dire prognosis, out of the 90210 tragedy comes something profoundly “beautiful.”
Next Monday’s season ender, while emotional, sends off the West Bev besties in the perfect way.
