If you’re looking for a a tropical paradise untouched by tourism, Little Corn will steal your heart. Always on the hunt for a new off-the-beaten-path adventure as far away as possible from swarms of tourists, commercial resorts, vacation rentals, cruise ships and raging night life, I fell madly in love with this nirvana nestled in the Caribbean Sea about 45 miles off the eastern shore of Nicaragua, and it’s one of the most special unspoiled gems I’ve ever been to. A main reason the island remains so unaffected by tourism is because it’s such a hassle to get to after two flights and then an hour-long, old, rickety, wooden Panga boat ride through unpredictably rough waters. There are no cars, no roads, no one even wears shoes on the island. The only way to get around is by boat, horse, or your own two bare feet. White sand secluded beaches, warm turquoise waters, postcard-perfect corral reefs, nightly live local music, daily fresh caught lobster, funky little rustic beachside backpacker cabañas, only a handful of local mom and pop run restaurants, and 750 of the warmest, beautiful natives you could ever meet make this island a true Caribbean best-kept-secret and the perfect place to completely unplug. By Gillian Zinser
Know before you go
There is hardly any access to the internet on the island, which is part of its greatest charm. Tranquilo Café and Café Desideri, however, do have wifi during select hours. And while most places run off of generators, there is still no electricity between 6am and 3pm so charge all of your electronics at night and be prepared to wake up when the fans shut off!
What to pack
Corrective Control Oil-Free Sunscreen SPF 30
iS Clinical Cleansing Complex
Aesop Protective Lip Balm SPF 30
Klorane Dry Shampoo
Tangle Teezer Compact Brush
Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Daily Face Peels
Olaplex Hair Perfector
Where to stay
Ensueños, Casa Iguana, Derek’s Place, Carlito’s Place, and Little Corn Beach & Bungalow.
Where to relax
Head to Karma Shack, a beautiful hidden gem in a garden behind Carlito’s Place that offers meditation, massage, and energy healing sessions.
Where to eat: Breakfast
Visit Casa Iguana for their legendary Coconut French Toast breakfast and best ocean views on the island.
Where to eat: lunch on the beach
Head to Sunset Shack Café on the beach for some fresh lobster ceviche and cold beer under the oldest almond tree on the island, then to Tranquilo Café Bar for their famous fish tacos and 2-for-1 cocktails.
Where to eat: cheap and chic
Try El Bosque for the best $4 lobster curry you’ve ever had.
Where to recharge
Check out Yemaya Island Hideaway & Spa for the best yoga classes and amazing fresh juices/smoothies.
Where to explore
Spend a day climbing the treehouse, lounging in hammocks, and playing on the swings that hang from the palms over the beachfront in front of Ensueños.
What to do after dark
Set in the woods just behind Tranquilo Café, Happy Hut plays the best live reggae on the island. The local’s joke is that you’re happy that night and “hut” (hurt) the next day.

Mushrooms, glacial lagoons, moss-covered lava, rainbows, rowdy volcanos, Dr. Seuss, Northern Lights, icebergs & wild horses.
Highly addicted to road trips, I went to Iceland last summer to drive the entire circumference of the island by its Ring Road. It’s almost an impossible travel experience to describe, which is why it’s a photographer’s wet dream. I’ve never experienced anywhere with such an ethereal, spiritual, dreamy, diverse landscape. I felt like I was tripping on mushrooms on a different planet at times. If you’re searching for an unforgettable, supernatural adventure riddled with glacial lagoons, geothermal hot springs, 20 hours of daylight, rowdy volcanos, epic hiking and camping, rainbows, breathtaking waterfalls, sunshine and hailstorms, all in the same ten minutes, this is the place. There are mountain colors you didn’t even know mountains came in, electric blue icebergs, wild horses, glacial ice caves, stunning fjords, rolling hills of moss-covered lava that looks like something Dr. Seuss dreamed up—and of course, the legendary Northern Lights.
(N) How do you take your coffee in Iceland?
(GZ) Black at sunrise.
(N) Most memorable experience in Iceland?
(GZ) Going out at sunset on a boat on Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon riddled with the most beautiful electric blue icebergs that are thousands of years old. And cracking a beer in the nature baths in Myvatn at night, staring up at the Northern Lights.
(N) What is the most important item you bring when you travel?
(GZ) My 35mm point and shoot camera
(N) Who is a role model/mentor in your life?
(GZ) I don’t really have one. Any interested applicants please apply. But my favorite photographers of the moment are: Alec Soth, Nan Goldin, Francesca Woodman, Diane Arbus, William Eggleston, Ryan McGinley, Jordan Sullivan, Max Doyle, James Nachtwey and Sebastio Salgado.
(N) Why do you make art?
(GZ) I’m not ever sure. I guess I take photographs to try and capture feelings and moments I wouldn’t know how to recall or share through words.
(N) What are you working on now?
(GZ) Shooting a short film called “End Of Babes” directed by wunderkid Jimmy Marble.
(N) Where are you going next?
(GZ) Cuba.
(N) What was the first thing you ate when you got back?
(GZ) Probably a burrito.

Whether you are a filmmaker, or one of the Sundance programmers whose task it is to identify the films that make up a line-up, it is indeed the most wonderful, panic-filled and nerve racking time of the year. The 31st edition of the Sundance Film Festival kicks off on January 22nd with Park City and Salt Lake City playing host to some of the more innovative, thought-provoking narrative and non-fiction films of 2015. Last year, a Jenga tall order of 4,057 features and 8,161 shorts were submitted. Now let’s think about those numbers for a second.
Twenty years ago, Terry Zwigoff’s Crumb claimed the Grand Jury Prize Documentary award, Living in Oblivion‘s Tom DiCillo was honored with the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, and Edward Burns’ micro-budgeted The Brothers McMullen (there is a read-worthy, lively, eleventh hour account on how it was submitted to the fest in Ted Hope’s “Hope for Film”) won the Grand Jury Prize Dramatic prize. Engrained in the Sundance folklore is the ongoing blood, sweat and tears struggle of the American independent filmmaker, which also acts as a testament to the hard-working indie film community at large (shout out goes to the producers and technicians behind the camera). There is a method to the madness, and it’ll likely never change.
Prior to the exciting announcements that will be made in early December, last week I proposed four days worth of predictions, a total of 80 films (including 15 docu films) that have, in my opinion Sundance written all over them. Truth be told, some are expected longshots, there are the next to no-shots, some will land elsewhere and a good chunk will indeed be part of the line-up. Here is a batch of 30 other titles that we took a long, hard look at and finally didn’t include in our prediction profiles, but wouldn’t be surprised if a handful do trickle into one of the ten programmed sections.
- Actress Marianna Palka saw her debut film Good Dick land at 2008 edition of the fest and she now appears to be back into creative mode with a pair of projects. The one we are zeroing in on is titled Worthy and stars Gillian Zinser, Jason Ritter, Lukas Haas.

“The Blind Side” star Quinton Aaron, “Twilight Saga” actor Edi Gathegi and “90210” actress Gillian Zinser are set to star in British writer Ben Caird’s feature directorial debut “Halfway,” TheWrap has learned.
Jonny Paterson is producing the movie, which Aaron will executive produce with former NFL star Nnamdi Asomugha (“Beasts of No Nation”), Tommy Oliver and longtime entertainment executives Bonnie Greenberg and Jonathan Baker.

“Halfway” stars Aaron as Byron, a recently-released convict who finds himself trapped between two worlds — his urban criminal past and his new life as the only black man in a predominantly white, conservative Wisconsin farming town. The film chronicles Byron’s struggles as he adapts to his new life on probation, while trying to elude the very real threat of relapsing into his old life of crime.
Zinser will play the eldest daughter of Byron’s new family for whom he becomes a friend and confidante, while Gathegi plays Paulie, Byron’s lifelong pal who hasn’t been afforded the same second chance.
Amy Pietz and TJ Power will co-star in the film, which started production earlier this week on location in Montfort, WI.

The “Halfway” filmmakers intend for the movie to serve as a commentary on the fractured incarceration system in America and the serious socio-economic implications that result from recidivism (the reincarceration of released felons for a similar crime within a short period of time). The American prison system has been at a breaking point for years, with a 700% growth in inmate population since 1973 that now stands at 2.4 million — higher than any other democratic nation in the world. Coupled with the discouraging statistic that nearly 66% of released prisoners will find themselves back in prison within three years, and approximately 75% within five years, it’s clear that more should be done to ensure that released prisoners are given the opportunity for an actual second chance.
The executive team behind “Halfway” supports entertainment that illuminates social conflict, and specifically develops projects that aim to inspire social change. To that end, they have announced plans to form the Halfway Foundation, which will seek to raise awareness for and create more public initiatives towards reducing recidivism rates.

Canadian production outfit Incendo has begun shooting its latest movie, Custody, on location in Montreal.
The film stars Gillian Zinser (Liars All) and Ryan Blakely (Dream House), with Tristan Dubois (Stealing Paradise, Surrender) directing. The movie tells the story of an in-home nurse single mother whose daughter is abducted, leaving her to decide whether she can hold one of her patients hostage and ultimately kill him.
Custody is produced with the participation of Bell Media. Jean Bureau, Incendo’s president and CEO, will exec produce.
“We are excited to be starting another new production with Gillian and Ryan,” Bureau said. “Custody continues our objective to take new and exciting roads with our stories and offer character-driven thrillers that will appeal to a young-adult audience worldwide.”
